Husky & the Robin

Published October 23, 2011 by Littleskew

Just after our Indian Summer we seemed to bypass Autumn and head straight to Winter.  One day I was looking out of the window and saw that the sky was a bright grey colour, the type you get just before it snows; people were wrapped up and walking around all hunched up from the cold.  It felt like a late November evening (it was actually an early October morning) and I felt like reaching for a hot chocolate and cuddling up under a blanket.  My mind began to drift off and this is where it ended up.

(we seemed to have back tracked and we now have a nice Autumn feel…crazy weather)

  • I love this. The Husky looks so soft and young, and the bird is just so sweet. I love the snow too and the trees. My eye just zooms to the Husky’s eye. Very nicely done. I could look at this image for a long while. :)

    • Thank you so much for your comment Katie, it’s very kind of you. So glad you were drawn to his eye; I’ve an awful habit of not knowing when to stop and was afraid that I was losing the husky in the background and the surroundings. Thanks again :)

      • You’re more than welcome! I came back here after your comment on my current post, and again, I’m just loving this drawing. It is just so sweet. And my eye does go to the Husky and then back to the Robin..

As a photographer, I know all about taking into account the background when composing and image, so I can totally understand your thought process. I think you did wonderfully with this. I notice the background too, as the Husky’s ears take me to it, and the robin does too. So wonderful composition. :)

      • Such a nice comment Katie, thank you so, so much. I suppose composing both drawings and photography are very similar, it’s all your art at the end of the day and it takes time, imagination and care.

I wiki’d Gumtrees after your post and we don’t get them here apparently which is a shame, the photograph you have up is beautiful and I imagine the tree itself is quite pretty :)

    • It depends where I am really; if I’m at home sketching I will use my sketching pencils and go from the light ones to the heavy ones. Once or twice I’ve used my charcoal pencils to smudge (I did this with ‘Lost’). If I’m out I just use a regular multipack pencil. With this sketch I started it on a break at work and continued it throughout the week using my multipack pencil, when I was finished I brought him home so I could darken some areas with my sketch pencils.
I don’t use models but I do think that I see things that plant a scene in my head like with ‘Lost’, I was inspired by the background to the Leona Lewis video and started sketching something similar. With this picture I just started off doodling; I was colouring a tiny circle in the middle of the page which then became a nose. I decided I wanted to draw a husky (I put this down to the cold weather). Once he was finished I wanted to give him some company but didn’t want to draw another one, I started thinking of animals you get in the snowy weather and thought of a Robin. I already had the husky looking up so I couldn’t draw the Robin on the ground. I sat back and thought of things he could be sat on, I thought of a shovel, an old snow boot… other random things before I settled on a stump. With the husky’s front legs I didn’t know if I was sketching them right so I looked up pictures of dogs to check I was doing it right, same as the Robin.
… I seemed to have rambled on a bit here :)

  • Nice pencil work! You really captured the mood here. The shading really looks nice, the snow, the husky, your little bird…nice drawing.

  • When you visited my blog, did you notice the invitation in “Our Sunday Guest”? I enjoy your blog, love your art and hope you will consider taking me up on the invite; which reads:

  • Dearest, I am looking for always your new drawings… I love art world and creative world… My son, he is amazing gifted me all his pencils (that he was using while he was a student in the architecture field of univsersity) how made me happy, like a child… I have now full of pencils… papers and pencils… papers and watercolours… they are all so exciting… I have so many ideas but time doesn’t enough for me… I can’t arrange myself well enough. Especially photography takes so much time and also being busy with my home too (cooking, cleaning, ironing, etc.) Anyway, just I wanted to say, you have a wonderful talent, and it’s been an inspirational visit for me. And also I learn from you too. Angels, muses, beauties be with you always, Thank you, with my love, nia

    • You are such a kind person Nia, your comments always make me smile :) see!
Do carry on with the painting, drawing, etc… colours and messy paints aren’t just for children, I love them :) It is hard to find the time, but once you do it’s amazing what you can do with it
I will look forward to you posting some of your works

  • Thanks for visiting my new blog today, it brought me here and I am very happy about that. The Husky and Robin drawing is like looking at Jack London illustrated. I’m also interested in the Irish connections in your work, celtic and the dancers, as I have been living most of my adult life in Ireland and love the culture. Happy sketching.

    • What a compliment; Jack London illustrated. Thank you :)
Both my parents are from Ireland and I grew up in an Irish pub. My summers as a child were spent in Ireland and I still try to visit once a year; I’m very proud of my roots :) I suppose I would be classed as London Irish…

Best of luck with your blog; I’ll be back to visit soon :)

  • I love this drawing. I grew up with a husky as a pet, and then when he passed away we got another husky, who’s still with my parents. Your drawing is really gorgeous and really captures the expression on the husky’s face.

  • This composition is so very nice. You handled the challenge of making each object stand out by using well-placed lights and darks. I like the way you did the forest background too. There are a lot of good things I could say about this. It also makes me think you would be excellent at illustrating children’s books.

Thank you so much for liking & commenting on my posts.

    • Thank you so much for your comment; I would love to illustrate children’s books but I have no idea where to start.
It was a bit of a challenge as the more I was doing to the background the more I risked losing the animals to it.

Thank you for visiting and commenting :)
